Super Easy Recipe for Easy Vegan Pita Dough
- 1 cup warm water
- 1.5 tsp yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2.5 cups All Purpose flour
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- reserve flour if needed
Mix water, yeast, sugar and !/2 cup of flour. Let sit for 10 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredient and stir into a shaggy dough. Dump onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if too sticky.
Cover and set aside to rise until it doubles, about and hour. It is ready to make pita and flatbread but if you want to make bread or rolls let it rise and ferment overnight in the fridge up to 3 days.
Rolling and/or Storing
This is enough for eight 8 inch pitas/flatbreads. So divide the dough into eight balls and roll them out to about 8 inch circles.
If you don’t want to use it all at this point store it in the fridge for three days or divide into portions and freeze. You can also roll out larger pieces to make topped flatbreads or pizza.
Cooking
Stovetop
Heat up a 9 inch pan on top of the stove and drop your rolled disk in. Cook for about 15 seconds then flip it. Cook it for about 30 seconds until bubbling and brown spots forming on the bottom. Flip again and cook until brown spots forming on the bottom and getting puffy.
Oven
Put pizza stone, cast iron skillet, or cookie sheet in the oven on the middle shelf. Heat oven to 500 degrees. Put as many rolled out dough circles as you can on the cooking surface and cook for about 4-6 minute until brown spots start forming.
