I tried many recipes and this easy oat milk came out the best. It took less than 5 minutes and costs less than fifty cents for a quart.
If you want to learn more I really like this post from “chocolate covered Katie”
Why Oat Milk
I think oat milk is the closest to dairy milk of all the plant based substitutes. and it is the cheapest and easiest to make.
Two Things!
- the milk will separate, so shake it
- the milk will thicken when heated, so it is good for sauces
How to make it
The recipe is super easy and only takes a few minutes. The timing is important and the maple syrup, vanilla, and salt are optional but they really give the milk a great flavor. Here we go..
- put 4 cups water, 1.5 tsp maple syrup, 1/2 tsp vanilla and a pinch of salt in a blender (you can sub any sweetener for the syrup but maple syrup is the best.
- add 3/4 cup of rolled oats and immediately blend for 30 seconds. I found you have to it very fast so the oats don’t become slimy.
- strain immediately!!!!
- Chill and enjoy
You can make the it thicker by cutting down on the water. Coming soon my chutney recipe using the oat milk and served with my favorite vegan Indian Dish
